The youngest of King Triton’s daughters, and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. With mermaids forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.
I think ultimately what makes this movie work is Halle Bailey. She does a great job as Ariel. I actually liked Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric as well. I think the rest of the movie has a few hiccups, but ultimately is at least decent enough to not drag everything down. Sebastian for example has a design that I just do not like, but Daveed Diggs does a great job voicing him that it sort of balances out. The new songs here aren't great, I liked Prince Eric's song the best of the new ones but it was still lacking just a bit though he did sing it well. Visually the film is very hit and miss. Overall, it's enjoyable enough. Certainly better than their recent remakes. 7/10
