When loyalty to country becomes loyalty to a lie, one teen risks everything to expose the truth. With the Gestapo closing in, he must decide what it really means to be a good German.
This is such an incredible and powerful story. A story about standing for truth and doing what's right no matter the consequences. Also, a story about faith and understanding that Jesus' way was to love everyone and be kind, but all while still boldly standing for truth. There is such power in simply proclaiming the things that are true. Sometimes to do what is right takes great courage and I would hope that I would have even half of the courage of Helmuth Huebner. He was just a kid and was, even while surrounded by societal pressures to conform to Hitler's viewpoints, still had the courage to spread the truth about Hitler by writing letters. He even had pressure from places he shouldn't have, at church. Unfortunately, even those who call themselves Christians who talk about Christ's teachings to love God and love thy neighbor, they still gave into the hatred. At times, it feels like that happens today as well, not to the same degree (but seems to be growing at an alarmingly high rate), where those who profess to be following Jesus spew so much hatred because of race, religion, politics, sexuality, etc. It should not be so and we should be quick to condemn those things and speak the truth and love as Jesus did. In regards to the filmmaking aspects, I thought it was well executed. Well written, well directed, well acted. Honestly kinda refreshing for me. I am a member of The the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, same as Helmuth, and normally when I see a film that fairly represents members of my faith, unfortunately the filmmaking is often not great and it can be limiting in effective and emotional storytelling. But this does well in that regard. Overall very solid. 9/10
