Superman, a journalist in Metropolis, embarks on a journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent.
Oh man, I really did not like this. Like at all. It was overly silly and rarely funny. The story was a huge mess. Emotional attempts all fall flat. Krypto was annoying and kinda pointless. I basically disliked almost every creative choice here. There are a few moments here and there that I liked. I do like Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and occasionally liked Mr terrific, but hated the rest of the "Justice Gang". Nicholas Holt was fine as Lex Luthor, but I thought how they wrote his character was just not great. David Corenswet was really just ok. And wasn't exactly thrilled with how they portrayed his character. His temper was short. Often lacked self control or ability to maintain composure when he is in situation of conflict. Just not really what I exactly think the character of Superman should be. But I will note I have not been a fan of James Gunn's films as of late, not since the first 2 Guardians of the Galaxy films. So it may just be that it's not my tastes. I'd honestly say this is my least favorite of his that I've seen. It was just kinda hard to sit through as it was trying so hard to be funny, and I just never really laughed. But I also feel like it's just not really the tone that I feel works with the character either. It feels like they saw that people rejected what Zack Snyder did with the more dark and broody take and just really swung way too far in the other direction. It also feels like they are trying to Marvelize (not a real word, I know) DC and just make it super quippy. I enjoy much of the MCU, so I don't mean that as a dig, it just doesn't really fit here imo. And even if it did, I'd prefer DC to be different. I'm not saying humor isn't allowed, but a much more balanced and grounded tone would have gone a long way for me. I'd add that there is one particular tease for something at the end of the film (not the after credits scenes which there are 2, both not worth sticking around) that I just really don't like that creative direction for what was setup. Honestly, James Gunn's DCU has completely lost me from the beginning. Overall I'd rate it 3/10.
