Ruby Gillman, a sweet and awkward high school student, discovers she's a direct descendant of the warrior kraken queens. The kraken are sworn to protect the oceans of the world against the vain, power-hungry mermaids. Destined to inherit the throne from her commanding grandmother, Ruby must use her newfound powers to protect those she loves most.
This film was awful. Too bad after DreamWorks great puss and boots 2 last year. This movie was basically turning red, but not good. The dialogue was really bad at times and none of the voice cast even seemed to attempt to even bother trying. The story is super predictable. But I find the messaging actually very mixed. I mean like turning red it alludes to preparing daughters for puberty, but it also attempts a message of anti discrimination and not judging due to appearance, but that kinda message sort of falls flat when you embrace and affirm a negative stereotype of one sea species even when you try to break stereotype for another. So the film just didn't work on any level. The humor doesn't really land either. I wasn't bored and the animation is ok looking, nothing special, but that's why I give this film a 4/10
